Both styles of tops allow for the bases to be fastened directly in the underside of the top. There is no alignment of holes or even specific screw gages necessary. You do need to be sure that screws are not too long as to poke through the top of the table top. More importantly the spread of the feet of the base must be taken into consideration when replacing table tops. You cannot pull a 24" table top off a base and replace it with a 36" table top on that same base. You will have wet and soiled patrons.
